MIDDLEBURY — Finally the Raiders have come home to Middlebury.

In their first home meet of the high school swimming season the Raiders swept the Goshen Redskins Tuesday night. The girls score was 132-35 and the boys 140-35.

“It feels good to be home and swimming in front of our fans,” Northridge coach Joe Keller said. “It seems like we have been traveling all over northern Indiana. We have been to Chesterton, Homestead, Penn and Warsaw.

“It was also nice to be at our 10-lane pool. We have a fairly large boys team and with the exception of a couple swimmers were able to get everyone in two events. That was good from the standpoint it gives us a chance to see what our abilities are and where we are progressing.”

Chris Oleksiak is the first-year Goshen coach.

“In a meet like this we are not as concerned about the scoreboard as we are about our times and whether or not we are improving,” Oleksiak said. “We had some lifetime bests and that is what we are looking for.”

Keller has been around long enough to remember when Oleksiak swam for Center Grove High School.

“He swam there for a good friend of mime Jim Todd,” Keller said. “It is going to be interesting to see what Chris can do at Goshen. It’s good to see young guys like Chris coming into the sport. He told me tonight he is looking forward to seeing what his kids can do at the end of the season. To me that shows he understands what fast swimming is all about.”

Keller felt the wins were team efforts, but he did highlight the efforts of JV swimmer Bryce Brouillette in the 500-yard freestyle.

“Bryce’s personal best in the 500 before tonight was 5:54. Tonight he went 5:18,” Keller said. “I told him before the meet that I wanted to see a badge of honor from him tonight. When you have a time drop like that it can be an inspiration to others on the team.”

Sydnee Emerson won the 100 butterfly (1:01.08) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.27) and Katie Hughes the 200 individual medley (2:13.39) and 100 freestyle (54.62) to lead the Northridge girls.

Jesse Drake took the 200 free (1:53.69) and 500 free (5:05.07), Seth Cripe the 200 IM (2:01.54) and 100 butterfly (54.43) and Camden Koch the 100 free (50.77) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.01) to pace the Northridge boys.

The Goshen girls had two winners as Olivia Wenger finished first in the 50 free (25.91) and Emma Hussey the 100 backstroke (1:04.51).

“Olivia just managed to out touch the Northridge girl,” Oleksiak said. “The 50 free is a different race. She had a good angle into the water on the start but missed her turn a little bit. That is something we can work on.

“Emma had a lifetime best in the IM and came back to win the back.”

The Goshen girls were missing Natalie Evans who was out sick.

“With Natalie we probably would have won the medley relay,” Oleksiak said.

Mitchell Walters finished second for the Goshen boys in the 100 (51.21). He arrived after the meet had started do to a freshman basketball game.

“His split time in the 100 free would have won the 50 free,” the coach said.
