SOUTH BEND, Ind. — D. J. Kennedy made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left and St. John’s held on to win 69-68 Sunday night for its first Big East road win of the season.

It was the second straight win for St. John’s (14-10, 4-8) after a five-game losing streak. The Fighting Irish (17-9, 6-7) couldn’t win without Luke Harangody, who was out with a deep bone bruise to his right knee. Notre Dame’s Tory Jackson missed a pair of 3-pointers in the closing seconds.

Tim Abromaitis led the Irish with 24 points. His 3-pointer with 90 seconds left put the Irish ahead 66-64.

Dwight Hardy, who led the Red Storm with 16 points, made a 3 with 57 seconds left to give St. John’s a 67-66 lead. But Tyrone Nash, who had a career-high 16, made two free throws with 38 seconds left to put Notre Dame back in front.

The Red Storm went ahead 59-58 on a three-point play by Justin Burrell, then Anthony Mason Jr. hit a 3-pointer with 4 minutes left to give St. John’s a four-point lead.

St. John’s had been 0-5 in road games in the Big East.

Hardy was 5-of-7 from 3-point range and helped spark a 16-2 run in the first half when the Red Storm hit four straight 3-pointers. St. John’s was 10-of-20 overall from behind the arc. Kennedy, Mason and Burrell finished with 12 points each for the Red Storm, which shot 48 percent for the game.

Ben Hansbrough added 13 points for the Irish, who saw their dwindling NCAA tournament hopes fade a bit more.

Despite being without Harangody, who sat on the bench in a suit, the Irish managed to outscore St. John’s 20-16 in the paint and had a 28-27 rebounding edge. But they were never in control against the Storm.

Jackson, who had a career-high 25 points in a loss at Seton Hall on Thursday, missed his first seven shots, finishing 1-of-10 from the field, and had five turnovers with just three assists.

St. John’s forced 13 turnovers by the Irish, who had only had six players who played more than 5 minutes. St. John’s had 11 players get in more than 5 minutes.
