WARSAW — Four individual champions in five events were the local highlights in the IHSAA girls track and field regional Tuesday night at Warsaw High School.

Chloe Bontrager of Fairfield won high jump (5-3), Karlee Lehman of Northridge the 300 hurdles (46.90), Jada Parzygnot of Wawasee in pole vault (11-2) and Morgan Dyer of Elkhart Memorial the 1,600 (5:12.04) and the 3,200 11:08.67.

Mishawaka won the team title with 77 points. Penn was second at 61, followed by Warsaw 55, Elkhart Memorial 48, Northwestern 38, Northridge and Culver Academies both 36, Wawasee 26, South Bend Washington 22 and Concord 20 to round out the top 10. Fairfield tied for 14th with 16 points, NorthWood was 16th with 14 and Elkhart Central 18th with 13.

The first, second and third place finishers in all individual events and relays, plus any individual or relay team meeting the state standard in the regional finals of their event, qualify for the state meet. The state meet is Saturday, June 1 at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Fairfield coach Matt Thacker recognized assistant coach Kirt Hunsberger for helping Bontrager win her regional championship.

“Kirt tweaked her approach. He shortened it up and that helps her get over the bar quicker,” the coach said. “She is a tall girl with a long frame. Winning a regional title is good for her and good for Fairfield.”

Thacker, like a lot of coaches, is fighting the numbers game.

“We need to get some more girls out,” he said. “If we get some more out we can be competitive and be competing for conference championships. We could get some more girls out of regional and competing at state.”

Northridge’s Lehman followed up her sectional performance with another great race in the 300 hurdles.

“She didn’t realize she had won until after the race. She asked the girls next to her did I win,” Northridge coach Trisha King said. “She went out strong as she usually does. She had some competition coming around the final turn, but she dug deep. She is a determined and disciplined runner. That has been the key for her all season.”

Also for Northridge, Shelby Heerschop was second in the 200 (26.17) while she teamed with Madison Sorg, Ella Hoefer and Ariana Stoltzfus were third in 4x400 (4:07.69).

“Shelby is terrified about state. She is more comfortable being in a team event,” King said. “She runs so smooth and is so strong in the last 50 meters, which is why she is a good 200 runner.

“This is one of the first times the 4x400 has had traffic, but they handled it well. They kept their heads on straight. One of the things I always tell them is to never panic.”

Dyer was the meet’s lone double winner.

“Morgan was fantastic,” Memorial coach Adam Homo said. “I told her to go out hard and take control of the 3,200. That is what she did at the state cross country meet and she finished seventh. The 1,600 was the same go out hard and see who tries to stay with you.

“We talk about strategy before the race. She is mature enough to suggest things.”

Summer Cooper of Concord place third in the 800 ( 2:21.44).

Bailey Hayden, Nadia Palacios, Cameron Kryder and McKenzie Smith of Wawasee finished third in the 4 x 800 relay (10:21.88).
