The Northridge Raiders wrestling team slipped past Goshen on Thursday in Middlebury, winning 37-33 in a Northern Lakes Conference match.

The Raiders trailed 21-5 and 27-12 but won seven of nine matches in one stretch. Goshen couldn’t overcome forfeits in the 103 and 189-pound weight classes.

“We hadn’t beaten Goshen in several years, so it’s kind of nice,” said Northridge coach Joel Stoffel. “But more importantly it’s a conference win. We wrestled good.”

Raider senior Justin Riehm clinched the win with a 6-1 decision in the 215-pound bout.

“That was the big match,” Stoffel said. “Justin has had some struggles in the past but hopefully this means he’s turned the corner. It should be a good confidence booster for him.”

Northridge’s only win by pin was by sophomore Reece Farnham at 160.

Other Raider winners were sophomore Ross Powell at 130, junior John Marchbanks at 140, senior Josh Wickersham at 145 and sophomore Drew Graber at 171.

Freshman Gary Houser (103) and senior Joe Gibson (189) won by forfeit for Northridge.

Northridge is now 5-4, 2-1 in the NLC. The Raiders’ next meet is next Wednesday when they host Jimtown.

“I feel good at this point in the season,” Stoffel said. “We had a rough day at Plymouth, but we adjusted a couple things and we’re looking pretty good now. I think we’re about where we need to be.”

The match was not without its bright spots for the Redskins. Freshman Zack Worcel pinned his opponent in his first varsity match at 112.

“Zack’s been on JV but I gave him a shot and he came out and pinned the kid,” Goshen coach Jim Pickard said. “We’re a young team but we had some young kids come through. We’re building experience as we go along.”

Also winning by pin for the Redskins were senior Zac Bechtel at 119, junior Braden Barkes at 135, senior Aaron Nesbitt at 152 and junior Kyle Edlund at 285.

Senior Ty Cooper won an 11-10 decision at 125 for Goshen.

“When I figured up the score before the match based on what I thought we’d do, I had us losing 36-27,” said Pickard. “We had some guys battle and won a couple I didn’t think we would.

“I don’t like to lose, of course, but realistically this is kind of the way this season is going to go. It’s hard to make up for two forfeits every night.”

The Redskins are now 6-4, 2-3 in the NLC. They will attend the Hobart Super Duals on Saturday.

Goshen won the JV matchup 32-24. Winners for GHS were Dustin Chowning, Keean Pries, Rob Andrews, Luis Estrada, Chris Figueroa and Jacob Clark.

JV winners for Northridge were Eric Miller, Devin Moyer, Nathan Freeze, Nathan Hickey and Justin Divietro.
