Two tournaments and two shootouts are on the schedule for local high school boys basketball teams over the holiday season.
The Goshen holiday tourney will be played on Saturday, Dec. 30.
Elkhart Memorial meets Lakeland in the 10 a.m. opener with the host Redskins squaring off with Garrett around noon. The consolation game is slated for 6 p.m. and the championship around 8.
Goshen’s last won its tourney in 1997 when the Redskins trimmed NorthWood 36-35 in the finale. Thomas Kline scored 13 points and Jon Swartz 10 for the Redskins. Goshen defeated Wawasee 47-42 in the opening round as Swartz tossed in 20 points, Scott Defrees and Phil Mikel both nine.
Fairfield is hosting a holiday tourney, also on Dec. 30.
Bethany Christian and the host Falcons square off at 10 a.m., followed by Bremen and Jimtown around 11:30. The consolation contest is slated for 6 p.m. and the championship around 7:45.
Concord hosts a shootout on Friday, Dec. 29 and Saturday, Dec. 30.
On Friday, Concord faces NorthWood at 6 p.m., followed by Northridge and Michigan City around 8. On Saturday, Michigan City and NorthWood square off at 6, followed by Concord and Northridge around 8.
Wawasee is involved in a shootout at Plymouth on Saturday, Dec. 23. The Warriors face DeKalb at 10 a.m. and Carroll (Allen County) around 7:45 p.m. The host Pilgrims will play Carroll around 11:45 a.m. and DeKalb at 6 p.m.
The Northern Indiana Conference tournament is slated to be played Wednesday, Dec. 27 through Saturday, Dec. 30 at North Side Gym in Elkhart.
One game will be played on Dec. 27 with Mishawaka Marian facing Elkhart Central. On Dec. 28, Penn clashes with South Bend Washington at 2 p.m., followed by Mishawaka and South Bend Riley around 4, South Bend St. Joseph’s meets the Marian-Central winner at 6 and South Bend Clay and South Bend Adams clash around 8.
Eight area teams are among the Top 50 in the state in defensive average according to John Harrell’s Web site.
Jimtown leads the state, giving up just 29.0 points per game. Wawasee is seventh at 36.0, Plymouth 10th at 38.6, Concord tied for 25th at 42.0, Fairfield 27th at 42.3, Penn tied for 31st at 43.0, NorthWood 39th at 43.8 and Lakeland tied for 41st at 44.0.
Concord is the only area team among the Top 50 in scoring average. The Minutemen are tied for 46th at 66.5.
