MIDDLEBURY, Ind. — Scissors snipped and clippers buzzed at Orchard View Elementary School Monday during an event that paired free haircuts with a food drive.

Tiffany Baker, a stylist with Shear Artists in Elkhart, organized the afternoon of free haircuts for students.

Her daughter, Hannah, attends Orchard View and wanted to become involved with the school’s food drive. Baker heard from another parent that supplies at the Middlebury Food Pantry were very low, so she decided to come up with a creative way to get more people to donate.

After talking to school and state health officials for permission, she called the head of her alma mater, the Fairfield Vocational School of Cosmetology, to see if any students wanted to be involved. Twenty senior cosmetology students volunteered to help that day and approximately 45 students received haircuts in return for donated food items.

Baker said she hopes spread the word to more parents next year and gather even more food donations.
