SHIPSHEWANA — Fire destroyed a barn and damaged two buildings at a business in Shipshewana Friday.

The barn was reduced to ash, debris and scrap at Miller Excavating, 8340 U.S. 20, by the time the fire was extinguished.

Shipshewana firefighters responded to the scene around 2:15 p.m. and brought the blaze under control in about 10 minutes, Fire Chief Chad Miller said. Crews from the Middlebury and Topeka fire departments provided assistance.

Miller described the structure as a livestock barn that housed horses. No people or animals were injured during the fire, he said.

Heat from the fire melted siding on a garage across from one side of the barn. Siding on a house on the other side of the barn was also damaged. Two cars outside the barn and another vehicle that was apparently in the barn at the time were damaged or destroyed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Miller said.
