Multi-vehicle crash claims motorcyclist's life

NEW PARIS — A pickup truck crashed into several vehicles that were stopped in a construction zone near New Paris, killing a motorcyclist and injuring at least three others Friday. The information was just released today by the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office.

The northbound truck driven by Ricardo Vega, 23, Milford, slammed into a 2014 Harley Davidson driven by Darrell Lemon, Elkhart, and then struck the rear of a car driven by Jose Lazaro, 21, Goshen, on Ind. 15 near C.R. 50 at about 1 p.m., according to a news release from Elkhart County police.

Vega’s truck, which was hauling a trailer loaded with lawn care equipment, then left the highway, drove off-road a bit, swerved back onto the roadway and rear-ended a car driven by Tiffany Brady, 26, Milford, police said.

Lemon, 60, was thrown from his motorcycle and died at the scene, police said. He wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Lazaro was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Brady reported neck pain and arm numbness, while a child in her car was uninjured, police said.

Vega did not report any injuries.

Meanwhile, as the crash unfolded, another motorist, James Gluckin, 75, Elkhart, bailed a motorcycle he was driving in the opposite lane. Gluckin broke multiple bones, according to police.

A van at the scene had also been struck by debris, and took minor damage, from the crash involving the first group of vehicles, according to police.

Ind. 15 was closed from C.R. 50 to C.R. 146 for about four hours after the crash.

The investigation continues.
