GOSHEN — The Goshen Chess For Scholastic Success program held its annual winter chess tournament at Goshen Middle School on Dec. 13.

One hundred and sixty-nine students and adults from northern Indiana and Michigan played in five sections. Two of the sections, the Open and Reserve, were sanctioned by the U.S. Chess Federation.

Tying for first and second place in the Open section were Fort Wayne Expert Ben Bentrup, and Mat Leach of Mishawaka. Each scored 3.5 (of 4), having drawn with each other in the last round. The Reserve section was topped by Bobby Chan of Warsaw. He won all five of his games.

In addition to the two sanctioned sections, there were three Novice sections. Stefani Vinkemeier of Warsaw had the only perfect score in the Novice Grades 7-12 and Adults section. She won all five of her games.

Kent Baumann of Goshen was a perfect 6-0 to top the Novice Grades 4-6 section, and Josiah Yoder, also of Goshen, had the only perfect 6-0 score in the Novice Grades K-3 section.

Bentrup and his son John won the trophy for the best combined score by a parent and child.
