SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — First lady Laura Bush has canceled a trip to the University of Notre Dame scheduled for Saturday so she can attend the funeral of former first lady Lady Bird Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson died of natural causes at her Austin home Wednesday at age 94. A private funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon in Austin and she will be buried in the Johnson family cemetery.

Mrs. Bush had been scheduled to speak at the commencement program for Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education program, where 84 graduates will receive master of education degrees. The graduates have studied at the university the past two summers and served during the past two academic years in Catholic schools nationwide.

The Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, who served as president of the university for 35 years before retiring in 1987, will speak in place of Mrs. Bush, the university announced Thursday.
