ELKHART — An anonymous donor and a matching grant from the Community Foundation of Elkhart County helped The Shepherd’s Cove pay for a new HVAC unit.
The heating, ventilation and air condition unit went out in March and was fixed in November.
According to Sharlee Morain, executive director, an anonymous donor contributed $5,000 toward the new unit, and the Community Foundation of Elkhart County assisted with a matching grant of $8,000 through their Good Neighbor Grant Program. The remaining balance of the $16,000 unit came from general funds.
“We would never had been able to get our furnace issue fixed in time for winter without the foundation’s help,” Morain said.
“We believe that Shepherd’s Cove is another excellent example of our mission to improve the quality of life in Elkhart County by inspiring generosity,” said Pete McCown, president of the Community Foundation. “We are pleased with what they’ve presented to us and we expect them to be successful in their efforts. Shepherd’s Cove is another vital link in the chain of nonprofit entities that are improving our quality of life in Elkhart County.”
The Shepherd’s Cove Clothing Pantry is supplied by donations and distributes to families in need. Clients may come in for clothing and household items once a month and shop for as much as they need for free, pantry officials said. There is no income verification and no ID is required, but it makes the check-in process a little easier, they added. Clients may only get one piece of furniture a year, and a photo ID and Social Security card is required for that.
Donations are accepted all year, 24 hours a day, at the back of the building. Children’s clothing is generally in great demand, officials said.
Shepherd’s Cove is located at 347 W. Lusher Ave.
