Foul play suspected in death of child molester convicted in Elkhart County

BUNKER HILL — The Indiana State Police has launched an investigation into the death of a prison inmate who was convicted of child molesting in Elkhart County.

Lannie Morgan, 70, South Bend, died after he was found unresponsive in his cell at the Miami Correctional Facility in Bunker Hill around 9:40 a.m. Monday, the state police said in a news release Tuesday.

Results from an autopsy into Morgan’s death are still pending, but investigators suspect foul play and are approaching the case as a homicide, police said.

Morgan began serving a 30-year sentence in December 2011, Department of Correction information shows.

He was convicted and sentenced that month after he pleaded guilty to two felony counts of child molesting and a felony count of incest in a case that was held in Elkhart County Superior Court 3, court information shows.

The earliest Morgan would’ve been released from prison was October 2036, according to DOC information.
