ELKHART — Two homes were damaged by fire at 3:25 a.m. Saturday.
According to Elkhart fire investigator Geoffrey Crist, firefighters were called to 1021 W. Garfield Ave. for a possible fire.
When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the home. They also discovered that the fire had extended to a nearby home at 1019 W. Garfield Ave.
Bystanders told firefighters that the occupant of 1021 was out of town and that the occupants of 1019 were able to evacuate their home.
Firefighters got the fires under control at 4:03 p.m.
Crist reported that the fire started in the basement of 1021 W. Garfield, but what started the fire remains under investigation. There were no injuries. And the homes were not insured, according to the fire report.
