Merchants to kick off holiday shopping season

JOHN KLINE | THE GOSHEN NEWSScott Woldruff, owner of Woldruff’s Footwear & Apparel, 129 S. Main St., Goshen, takes a moment away from helping customers to talk about Sunday's Holiday Open House. Woldruff’s will be one of many downtown stores to open their doors for special hours Sunday as part of the annual downtown Holiday Open House.

GOSHEN — Merchants in downtown Goshen are set to kick off the holiday shopping season this Sunday with the arrival of the annual Holiday Open House.

Hosted by the Goshen Chamber of Commerce and the downtown Economic Improvement District, the annual shopping and entertainment event is set to begin at noon Sunday and run through 5 p.m.

“This is a longstanding event to kick off the holiday season. I can’t even tell you when it started. I’ve been here 26 years, and it was well before that,” said Scott Woldruff, owner of Woldruff’s Footwear & Apparel at 129 S. Main St. “So it’s a neat event, and we have lots of entertainment downtown, carolers, horse-drawn wagon rides, musicians, a free movie at the Goshen Theater for the children, and a visit from Santa Claus. So it’s just a good family holiday kick-off event.”

Nick Kieffer, president of the Goshen Chamber of Commerce, offered a similar sentiment regarding the open house.

“The goal of the event is really just to kick off the holiday shopping season and remind everyone you can find everything you need for your holiday shopping in downtown Goshen,” Kieffer said of the event. “So it’s just a good Sunday afternoon, a lot of fun for the family. And of course, we always encourage everyone to shop Goshen.”

Woldruff noted that the annual open house also presents a unique opportunity for downtown shoppers given that many downtown merchants aren’t typically open on Sundays.

“Some are, a few, but not nearly what will be open for this event,” Woldruff added, noting that hours may vary from store to store. “So it just kicks the season off. And several communities do a similar event on some day of the week. So it’s just that time of the year already.”
