TOPEKA — Injured Topeka firefighter Galen Bontrager returned home Monday with fanfare. According to Fire Chaplain Harold Gingerich, on May 16 two Topeka firefighters were trapped in an attic fire at Beauty and the Bull Bar and Grill near Wolcottville and suffered injuries. Bontrager had second and third degree burns to his hands. Since then, he has been in the burn center in Indianapolis, according to Gingerich. So firefighters and the community wanted to make his homecoming special Monday. Gingerich posted on Facebook that firefighters from Johnson Township escorted Bontrager from Kendallville, half way to Ligonier. Ligonier took them through town and then Topeka units, along with Mongo, LaGrange, picked things up at the County Line on Ind. 5 and brought them into town. "And then there was a cookout at the fire station," Gingerich writes.
