Fire at Northwest Indiana barn kills dozens of hogs

---- — KENTLAND, Ind. (AP) — A fire that swept through a northwestern Indiana barn killed dozens of hogs and other livestock despite the efforts by four fire departments to douse the flames.

Chief Kyle Conrad of the Brook-Iroquois Township Volunteer Fire Department says Friday night's fire killed 47 hogs and five goats.

Conrad tells the Journal & Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1fyzjfS ) the owners of the Newton County barn were at home when the fire broke out but the flames spread so rapidly that two nearby sheds also caught fire.

Firefighters extinguished the shed fires before either building sustained major damage, but Conrad says the barn was a total loss.

He says two firefighters sustained minor injuries after falling on the ice, but neither required medical attention.
