---- — SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The chancellor of the University of Oxford will be the May commencement speaker at the University of Notre Dame and receive an honorary degree.

The university has announced that Christopher Patten, who is also chairman of the BBC Trust, will be the featured speaker at the May 18 commencement. Notre Dame's president, the Rev. John Jenkins, described Patten as one of the world's pre-eminent Catholics.

He also is a former governor of Hong Kong and in 2004 he was appointed to Britain's House of Lords and is known as Lord Patten of Barnes. In 2010, Patten was appointed by the prime minister to oversee and manage the preparations for Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United Kingdom, the country's first papal visit in nearly 20 years.
