J. Eric Haitsma

ELKHART — J. Eric Haitsma, 51, passed away Monday.

He was born Dec. 15, 1961, in Elkhart, to Klaas and Cornelia (VanderSijs) Haitsma.

He is survived by a son, John Tyler Haitsma of Bloomington; and a daughter, Delaynie Grace Haitsma of Goshen; siblings, Robert Haitsma of Cody, Wyo., Anthony Haitsma of Goshen, Dawn (Brian) Desimone and Steven (Jamie) Haitsma, both of Elkhart; his father and stepmother, Klaas and Bonnie Haitsma of Goshen; and his mother, Cornelia VanderSijs of Elkhart.

Eric graduated from Elkhart Central High School in 1980 and owned Haitsma Lawn Care. He was a police officer for Goshen Police Department from 1990 to 1998. Eric was an avid Miami Dolphins fan and had an extreme passion for fish and aquariums.

Visitation will be Saturday from noon until the 4 p.m. memorial service at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home, Elkhart. The Rev. Carl Crise will officiate. Cremation has taken place.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to help with funeral expenses.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
