James Curtis Barber, 76, died Tuesday at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born March 9, 1936 in San Francisco, Calif., to James Frank and Eunice (Otwell) Barber Jr.
He married Sandra VanderWerf, June 23, 1979. in Goshen. She survives.
Also surviving are two children, Lynn Barber, Las Vegas, Nev., and Greg Barber, Sacramento, Calif.; a granddaughter, Ryane (James) Shields; two great-granddaughters, Ashtyn and Camden; his stepmother, Anne B. Barber, Elgin, Okla.; four sisters, Patricia (Bud) Bylsma, Beaverton, Ore., Carolyn Moussa, Citrus Heights, Calif., Linda Wells, Noble, Okla., and Jamie Porter, Lawton, Okla.; and a brother, James F. Barber III, Elgin, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
MSG Barber retired from the U.S. Army in 1988 and then from the U.S. Postal Service in 2001.
He was a member of River Oaks Community Church, PM Mount Scott Lodge 540, Goshen Masonic Lodge 12, DAV Post 15, American Legion Post 30 and Scottish Rite.
Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home in Goshen, where a Masonic service will take place at 5:45 p.m.
Friends may also call one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Tuesday at River Oaks Community Church, 58020 C.R. 115, Goshen. The Rev. Scott Tilley will officiate.
Burial will follow the funeral at 2:30 p.m. at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich.
