James E. Lauver

SHIPSHEWANA — Jim Lauver, 57, died suddenly around 10:05 a.m. Thursday, while on his usual morning walk near his home.

He was born on Sept. 7, 1955 in Puerto Rico, to the Rev. J. Paul and Lois (Swihart) Lauver.  

On March 29, 1980, he married Jan Mast; she survives.

Surviving in addition to his wife are his parents, who live in LaGrange; two daughters, Jessie (Mike) Whitten of Zionsville, and Jenny Lauver of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Maggie Glaser of Carmel; three brothers, Paul (Marilyn) Lauver of Wolcottville, John (Patti) Lauver of Columbia, S.C., and David (Pam) Lauver of Jupiter, Fla.

Members of Jan’s family who survive his death include Bill and Doris Mast, Howe, Gary and Lynnette Mast, Mike and Judy Mast and Phil and Sandy Mast, all of Shipshewana, Lorilee and Brian Christner of Wolcottville, and Brian Mast of Howe.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Ann Lauver.

James worked as a mechanical engineer in research and development at Burr Oak Tool and Gauge in Sturgis, Mich. He graduated from Lakeland High School in 1973 and from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, in 1978. He was a member and elder of the Marion Mennonite Church, where he served as president of the church council for two terms. He had also served as a Sunday school teacher, chair of the ministry team and a youth sponsor.

He was an accomplished artist, played bass guitar, and sang bass in the PaGaJoJi Quartet for 22 years. He loved traveling, hiking, playing tennis and was very active in all church activities.

Visitation hours will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Marion Mennonite Church, 4½ miles west of Howe on Ind. 120.  

Burial will be private on Monday, followed by a celebration of life service at 10:30 a.m. at Shore Mennonite Church, Shipshewana. The Revs. Ron and Char Roth will officiate. Everyone is welcome to attend the celebration of life service.

Memorials may be given to the Marion Mennonite Church Building Project.
