SYRACUSE — Deborah Jean Nelson, 53, Syracuse, Ind., went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 1, 2013, at her residence.
She was born March 1, 1960, to Edward and Darlene “Dee”( DuPlain) Shannon in Canton, Ohio.
On Dec. 17, 1988, she married Jack Nelson in Canton. They moved to Syracuse 17 years ago.
Deborah was a graduate of Jackson High School in Canton. She was a graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, and received a master’s degree from Ball State University. She worked as a kindergarten teacher at Syracuse Elementary School.
In Canton, she had worked at Head Start as a teacher and principal. Deborah loved working with children and had taught vacation Bible school. She was a very caring and godly woman. She attended Nappanee Missionary Church for the past 12 years and served as a table leader at Wednesday night Oasis.
Deborah enjoyed being with her family and friends and spending time at the lake. She also enjoyed tennis and walking.
Deborah is survived by her husband, Jack; son, Chett (April) Nelson, Goshen; daughter, Stephanie (Craig) Nelson-Cormany, Colorado; grandchildren, Legend Hurd, Julia, Jenna and Jaedyn Nelson; parents, Edward and Darlene “Dee” Shannon, Canton, Ohio; brother, Michael (Yoko) Shannon, Okinawa, Japan; sister, Michelle “Shelly” (Russ) Satterfield, Lake Mohawk, Ohio; grandmother, Sophia DuPlain, Louisville, Ohio; and nieces, Erika and Eileen Shannon and Danielle and Jessica Satterfield.
Family and friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Nappanee Missionary Church Chapel and one hour prior to the funeral service which will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. The Revs. Dave Engbrecht and Justin Lamason will officiate.
Burial will be in Olive Cemetery, Wakarusa.
Memorial contributions may be given to Syracuse Elementary School.
