SOUTH BEND — Irma I. Matson, 96, died Monday afternoon at Center for Hospice Care, Roseland, where she had recently been admitted. She lived in Elkhart for many years and then lived with her daughter in South Bend.
She was born Aug. 24, 1917, to Harvey E. and Delta L. (Kintigh) Wagner in New Paris.
On Dec. 20, 1941, she married Elmer Raymond Matson at Sunnymede Church of God in South Bend. He preceded her in death Jan. 15, 2010.
Surviving are two daughters, Rae Jeaniene Matson, South Bend, and Sheryl M. Fields, Lake Ann, Mich.; two grandsons, Jeremy and Kevin Fields; three great-grandchildren, Cody, Zach and Laira Fields; a great-great-grandson, Brycen Fields; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Geiger, Angola, and Katheryn Wagner, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Dale, Clifford, Robert, Richard and Francis Wagner; and a sister, Audrie Myers.
Mrs. Matson was a member of First Church of God, Elkhart. She attended Bethany Christian High School in Goshen.
She had worked at Ball Band, Woolworth’s, and Kresge’s, and worked for several families in River Park before her marriage. Her family and friends remember her for her special caring and kindness to everyone.
Visitation will begin two hours prior to the 1 p.m. funeral service Thursday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen.
Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.
