Barbara L. Peterson

BRISTOL — Barbara L. Peterson, 79, passed away Sunday at her residence.

Barbara was born Jan. 22, 1934, to Melvin and Marion Seator Brines, in Saginaw, Mich. She grew up in Midland, Mich. and earned a degree in education from Michigan State University in 1956.

Barbara was a teacher in Elkhart Community Schools before raising her family. In 1976 she returned to school at the University of Notre Dame, where she earned a master’s degree and was employed as an adjunct associate professor from 1985 to 1994.

Barbara has been self employed as a fiber artist specializing in liturgical art for worship since 1980. Her work has been or is on display at the Midwest Museum of American Art, Trinity United Methodist Church, Michiana Regional Airport, the Hesberg Library and the Moreau Seminary of the University of Notre Dame and the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary. As a breast cancer survivor, she also exhibited work in two traveling exhibits, Art.Rage.Us and Healing Legacies.

Barbara was married in the chapel at Michigan State University in 1956 to Duane Peterson of Elkhart, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Carrie (Michael) Drews of Elkhart, Ned (Lynn) Peterson of Flower Mound, Texas, and Connie Peterson of Harrisonburg, Va.

Barbara is also survived by her sisters, Janet Mayer of Owosso, Mich., and Bonnie (Russ) King, of Plymouth, Mich.; and five grandchildren, Derek (Jennifer) Drews, of Granger, Erin Drews of Holland, Mich., Annie Drews of Elkhart and Alec and Jenna Peterson, of Flower Mound, Texas.

Barbara served the Elkhart Community through committee work for the Elkhart Schools, through her involvement at Trinity United Methodist Church and Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary and as a volunteer for the Midwest Museum of American Art, United Way, Family Counseling and Head Start.

Friends may call Thursday from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, Elkhart.

Services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Elkhart. The Rev. Mark Dicken will officiate.

Memorials may be made to Midwest Museum of American Art or to the Scholarship for the Study of Arts in Worship at the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary.
