ELKHART — William A. Swartout Jr., 68, passed away Friday at Elkhart General Hospital.
He was born Oct. 17, 1944, in Cheboygan, Mich., to William A. and Mary M. (Massey) Swartout Sr. On Aug. 8, 1970, in Goshen, he married Mary (Mimi) Morrison.
She survives along with a daughter, Susan (Matt) Miller of Goshen; a son, Chris (Romy) Swartout of Elkhart; and four grandchildren, Taylor and Kaitie Miller and Griffin and Kendal Swartout.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Swartout.
William graduated from Pellston High School, Pellston, Mich., and Ivy Tech College, Magna Cum Laude. He served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1969. He worked at Johnson Controls in maintenance and retired from Concord Community Schools after 18 years as a computer technician.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodcarving, golf and was an amateur photographer, but his main joy was attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was an avid Michigan fan and loved his dog, Brady.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral and Cremation Center, Elkhart, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Father Matthew Coonan officiating. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Goshen, at a later date.
