Harvey J. Miller

TOPEKA — Harvey J. Miller, 77, died at 11:40 p.m. Sunday at his residence. He had battled cancer since January.

He was born on March 14, 1936 in Chouteau, Okla., to Jacob S.S. and Wilma (Troyer) Miller.

On Feb. 21, 1957, he married Susie D. Miller in Topeka.

He is survived by his wife; six sons, Glen (Marlene) Miller of Shipshewana, Ernest (Linda) Miller of Ligonier, Harry Wayne (Marlene) Miller of Shipshewana, Harvey Jr. (Debbie) Miller of Syracuse, Perry (Anna Marie) Miller of Shipshewana, and David (Sylvia) Miller of Topeka; 10 daughters, Ruth Ann (Dennis) Miller of Ligonier, Sara (Vernon) Nisley of Topeka, Ida (Fred) Otto of Princeton, Mo., Lorene (Willard) Schrock of Ligonier, Mary (Marlin) Knepp of Shipshewana, Barbara (Raymond) Eash of Wolcottville, Wilma (Kenneth) Kauffman of Ligonier, Ada (Earl) Slabach and Dorothy (LaVerne) Whetstone both of Topeka, and Vera (Devon) Miller of Wawaka; 87 grandchildren; 87 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Freddie (Mary Ellen) Miller of Millersburg and Raymond (Lavina) Miller of Wolcottville; three sisters, Edna Fern Troyer of Marion, Mich., Ida (Ben) Miller of Goshen and Wilma (Gerald) Yoder of Topeka.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Clara and Fannie Miller; brother, Toby Miller; and three brothers-in-law, Johnathan Miller, Amzie Troyer and Samuel Miller.

He was a minister and a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Visitation was Monday and Tuesday at the family residence, 2800 W. 550 South, Topeka.

Funeral services will begin at 9:30 a.m. today at the Alvin Bontrager residence, 2845 W. 550 South, Topeka. Services will be conducted by Bishop Christy Mast and the home ministers.

Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, LaGrange.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income.
