— LAGRANGE — Michael J. Bowen, 73, died Monday at his residence.  

Mr. Bowen was born April 19, 1940, in Elkhart, to Robert B. and Elizabeth Lucille “Betty” (Morgan) Bowen.

Mike graduated from Shipshewana-Scott High School and Manatee Junior College with a degree in design drafting. While attending college in Florida, he was involved in water skiing with the Sarasota Bayfront Skiers. The ski club put on 21 shows a year under contract to the city of Sarasota.  

Mike was a steel fabricator at Spreuer and Son Inc. in LaGrange for more than 50 years. He was a devoted mushroom hunter and loyal Westview and Indiana University basketball fan. For many years, beginning in 1967, he bred and raised Standardbred (harness race) horses. He served several years on the board of directors of the Indiana Standardbred Association (ISA), was a former director and board chairman of the Shipshewana Area Historical Society and a member of the United States Trotting Association (USTA).

On Nov. 18, 1967, he married Jean I. Palenick in Shipshewana. Mrs. Bowen survives in LaGrange.

Also surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Michaela Bowen of Anderson, and Amy J. and Mark Whited of LaGrange; seven grandchildren, Marshall, Ariel, Laurel, Andrew, Jazzlyn, Aliza and Alana; eight great-grandchildren, Bo, Isabelle, Colette, Riley, Lucius, Farah, Sisylia and Ryder; a brother and sister-in-law, R. Steven and Sharon Bowen of Shipshewana; stepsister and brother-in-law, Beth Ann and Martin Moeller of Shipshewana; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Bowen and Elizabeth Bowen-Smith; his stepfather, Gordon Smith; and a son, Edson J. Bowen, who died  in 1989.

There will be a time of visitation today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Frurip-May Funeral Home, 309 W. Michigan St., LaGrange, where a funeral service will take place Friday at 10 a.m. The Rev. Robert Wyman will officiate.

Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in LaGrange.
