Roy G. Slagle

July 22, 1924-May 18, 2013

NAPPANEE — Roy G. “Junior” Slagle, 88, died Saturday after a number of recent years of afflictions and illnesses.

He was born and raised in Nappanee to Roy G. Slagle Sr. and Merlin Nancy “Merle” Strauss.

After high school he served in the U.S. Army in the European theater in the capacity as a sniper. After returning home he met and married Ruby Hall on Nov. 1, 1947, and raised two boys and two girls east of Nappanee, where they lived in a home built by Roy and his family. He was an accomplished carpenter adding to the home as the family grew larger.

Roy worked for the Bendix Corporation in South Bend and retired in 1985 after 30 years.

Roy and Ruby were Caretakers and Custodians of the Turkey Creek Brethren Church and served as Youth Leaders there for many years.

Roy was a kid at heart, always finding time to take his children and grandchildren hiking, cooking on an open fire, building a hut and camping out in the woods behind the family home.

Roy was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn (George Robert ‘Bob’) Nichols, in 1944 at the age of 23, and a brother, James “Bud” Slagle, in 2012 at the age of 89.

He is survived by his wife, Ruby Slagle; two sons, Allen (Charlene) Slagle and Roy Slagle, both of Nappanee; and two daughters, Sonna (Rick) Shrock, Constantine, Mich., and Sue (Dan) Miller, Sarasota, Fla. Also surviving is a brother, Eugene (Norma) Slagle, Wakarusa, and Sandy (Leon) Ringenberg, Elkhart, who is Marilyn’s daughter raised by Roy Sr. and Merle Slagle after Marilyn died at a young age.

He was loved and will be missed by his family and grandchildren. Until we all meet again in Heaven Roy, God’s Speed.

Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Thompson-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Nappanee Church of the Brethren. Officiating will be the Revs. Byrl Shaver and Roger Eberly. Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Memorial contributions may be given to the church.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income. How do you feel about the new lunch program?

I think it’s a good idea to feed all the students free of charge
