James Edward Shaum

Feb. 2, 1928-June 12, 2013

ENGADINE, Mich. — James Edward Shaum, 85, died peacefully Wednesday evening at Golden Leaves Living Center in Newberry surrounded by his caring family.

Born Feb. 2, 1928 in Wakarusa, Ind.,he was the son of the late Henry and Susanna (Witmer) Shaum.

On Sept. 8, 1956, he married the former Esther Troyer of Engadine. Jim moved to the Upper Peninsula from Wakarusa and became a self-employed carpenter, beginning the company now known as Shaum Construction Inc. in 1961. He was an active church member at the Wildwood Mennonite Church, serving in many capacities, including the construction of the building now housing the congregation.

Jim enjoyed meeting new people and loved helping others. He used his construction skills as a volunteer with Mennonite Disaster Service and Habitat for Humanity both before and after his retirement.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Kenton James Shaum; a sister, Miriam Shaum; and brother Lowell Shaum.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Esther of Engadine; children, Donita (Robert) Wheeler of Bristol, Ind., and Suetta (Ken) Hollinger of Engadine; granddaughters, Sierra Wheeler, Paige Erin Wheeler and Annika Hollinger; siblings, Mary Alice (Lowell) Martin of Nappanee, Ind., and Dana (Wilma) Shaum of Wakarusa; numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Wildwood Mennonite Church, Engadine, Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Jim Gerber will officiate.

Interment will take place at Sandtown Cemetery in Portage Township.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Mennonite Disaster Service, Habitat for Humanity or the Wildwood Mennonite Church in memory of James Shaum.
