ELKHART — Leona E. Bontrager, 77, formerly of Bemidji, Minn., died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at Hubbard Hill Estates, Elkhart. She had been in declining health.
She was born on March 25, 1936 in Middlebury, to Henry and Sarah (Hochstetler) Miller.
On June 12, 1955, she married Alvin J. Bontrager in Goshen. He died Nov. 8, 2011.
She is survived by her daughter, Dawn (Lin Hoppel) Bontrager of Mishawaka; three sons, Daryl (Marlisa) Yoder-Bontrager of Lancaster, Pa., Duane (Anne Martin) Bontrager of Harrisonburg, Va., and Dennis (Jane) Bontrager of Goshen; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth (Jesse) Beachy of Gladys, Va., and Elena (Amzie) Yoder of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers, Thomas (Naomi) Miller of Middlebury, and Simon Miller of Goshen.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jesse and Alpha Miller; and two sisters, Mary Bontrager and Martha Swartzentruber.
Leona had moved to the Blackduck, Minn. area in the early 1960s and lived there for 50 years. She was an active member of the Tenstrike Community Church and was a member of the Gideon’s Auxiliary for many years serving as chaplain for the state of Minnesota.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury.
Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Pleasant View Mennonite Church, Goshen. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Steve Pomp of the Tenstrike Community Church, Tenstrike, Minn., and the Rev. Tyler Hartford of Pleasant View Mennonite Church.
Memorial gifts may be given to Habitat for Humanity, Tenstrike Community Church, or Gideon’s International.
