J. Dennis Malone

May 24, 1936-July 2, 2013

WAPELLO, Iowa — John Dennis “Denny” Malone, 77, died Tuesday afternoon at his home with his family by his side.

The son of William and Nora Deneen Malone, he was born May 24, 1936 in Albia.

He married Joanne Louise Gerst Jan. 27, 1957, in Dodgeville. She preceded him in death Feb. 27, 2006.

He finished high school at Huron High School. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves. Denny was a conductor and brakeman for the Burlington Route of the Burlington Northern and was also a conductor for the California Zephyr for a total of 35 years. He then spent several years as a cattleman for Bob Gabeline.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Dodgeville, the Knights of Columbus of Burlington, the Brotherhood of Trainmen, currently the United Transportation Union, and the Burlington Route Society with model trains.

He was a 4-H leader of the Huron Junior Farmers. Along with his enjoyment of model trains, he enjoyed Old Threshers, flea markets, genealogy and traveling the country to watch his boys play football and wrestling.

Denny’s greatest love was the cattle shows where he traveled to many places, especially throughout the Dakotas and Nebraska. He did whatever it took to get his children to a cattle show. He also enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s showing of their 4-H projects. Denny never knew a stranger.

Denny is survived by a daughter, Joni (Patrick) Allen of Wapello; six sons, Jon (Tammy) Malone of Morning Sun, James “Jimmy” Malone of Iowa City, Jerry (Connie) Malone of Morning Sun, Jody (Beth) Malone of Piqua, Ohio, Jeff (Shayla) Malone and Jay (Angie) Malone, both of Morning Sun; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Noreen (Phil) Ingebritson of Fort Madison and Pat Malone of Burlington; and a brother, William “Ed” (Sharon) Malone, Goshen, Ind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joanne; a granddaughter, Denien; and three sisters, Bea Rupsch, Sharon Carlson and Jean Malone.

The funeral ceremony for Denny Malone will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Dodgeville, with the Rev. Father David Steinle as celebrant.

Burial will follow at the Wapello Cemetery.

Visitation with the family meeting friends will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello.

A memorial fund has been established for the benefit of the Blue Ribbon Foundation of the Iowa State Fair and the Des Moines County Fair.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income. How do you feel about the new lunch program?
