Arnold J. van Lummel

Arnold J. van Lummel, 87, 18392 Debra Drive, Goshen, died Wednesday at 5:36 p.m. at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, where he had been a patient for a brief stay. He had been in failing health the last few months.

He was born Sept. 3, 1921, in Prospect Park, N.J., to Harry John and Loretta (Vroegindewey) van Lummel. He came from Asbury Park, N.J., to Goshen in November 1990.

He was a retired pastor who served with Grand Avenue Reformed Church, Asbury Park, N.J., for more than 30 years, 1960-1990, and Clover Hills Reformed Church, Flemington, N.J., for more than 10 years.

He earned two master of divinity degrees from Western Theological Seminary, Holland, Mich., and Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, N.J.

Arnold took great pleasure in reading many various subjects. He also enjoyed working in his lawn.

On May 30, 1944, he married Marjorie Brower in Orange City, Iowa. She served at his side as a perfect pastor’s wife throughout their marriage of 49 years. She died Aug. 27, 1993.

He is survived by his daughter, Celia Ann Smith, Goshen; two sons, Mark (Marie) van Lummel, Granger, and Paul (Pauline) Haider, Tinton Falls, N.J.; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janet (William) Prommel, Hawthorne, N.J.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Greene Road Church, Goshen, where the funeral service will begin at 3 p.m. The Rev. John Wanders will lead the service.

Burial will be in Westlawn Cemetery, Orange City, Iowa.
