Herbert Dean Ummel

GOSHEN —  Herbert Dean Ummel, 83, died Friday afternoon at Golden Living Center, Elkhart.

Ummel was born July 28,1929 in Elkhart to Edward and Edith (Anglemyer) Ummel.

On Dec. 20, 1958 he married Muriel (Erb) Ummel, who survives.

He is also survived by three daughters, Kendra (Mike) Thomas of Fort Wayne, Karen (Lawrence) Cicotte of Muncie and Kristen (Alan) Steiner of Leo; five grandchildren, Joel and Luke Steiner, Lauren Buschbacher and Gabriel and Janay Cicotte; one great-granchild, Mary Buschbacher; three sisters, Joan Kirkham, of Greencastle, Lois Knouff, of Larwill and Phyllis Swick, of Columbia City; and one brother, Eldon Ummel, of Syracuse.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Robert, Richard, Stanley and Max Ummel and a sister, Carol Hines.

After attending Purdue University, Ummel worked as a dairy supervisor and was a member of the Bethel Missionary Church in Goshen. He was also a member of the Elkhart County Dairy Association for more than 50 years and coached the Elkhart County 4-H Dairy judging team from 1957-1981.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret-Lienhart Funeral Home, Wakarusa.

He will lie in state one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Wednesday at Bethel Missionary Church, Goshen. The Rev. Greg Morris and the Rev. Joel Gentz will officiate.

Burial will take place at Yellow Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bethel Missionary Church or the Elkhart County 4-H Dairy Club.
