Dean Warstler

MIDDLEBURY — Dean Warstler, 90, died peacefully at 2:10 a.m. Tuesday while at IU Health Goshen Hospital.

He was born July 23, 1923, in Elkhart, to Jay and Irene (Norwood) Warstler.

On Nov. 25, 1948, in Middlebury, he married Geraldine Varns. She survives. He was the love of her life for 65 years.

Survivors in addition to his wife are three daughters, Wanda (Ron) Miller, Goshen, Diane (Carl) Eash, Middlebury, and Bonnie Warstler, Elkhart; five grandchildren, Joey Eash, Jaynie (Mike) Kirby, Nicholas Miller, Nathan Miller and Natalie Miller; and two great-grandchildren, Layne and Nolan Kirby.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin sisters, Leora King and Leola Hughes; and a brother, Jim Warstler.

Dean started working at Varns & Hoover Hardware, Middlebury, in 1948, became owner of the business in 1971, and also owned Varns & Hoover Hardware in Shipshewana. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Middlebury where he was very active and served on the church council and taught Sunday school.

He was a World War II Army Veteran, a member of the American Legion Post 210 and former member of the Crystal Valley Exchange Club. He served as president on the school board, volunteered with the Middlebury Fire Department for over 20 years and served as the Fire Chief.

Dean and Geraldine were the 1998 Summer Festival Parade Marshals and the Book of Golden Deeds Recipients in 2002 and had volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels in Goshen. While wintering in Venice, Fla., for 29 years they attended Christ Methodist Church.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, Middlebury.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, Middlebury. Services will be conducted by Pastor Ron Russell.

Burial with full military honors by the American Legion Post 210 will follow in Grace Lawn Cemetery, Middlebury.
