John ‘Jack’ W. Thompson Sr.

June 9, 1932-Aug. 17, 2013

ELKHART — John “Jack” W. Thompson Sr., 81, passed away at his home Saturday.

He was born in Pitcairn, Pa., to James and Minnie Thompson June 9, 1932.

In Irwin Pa., June 23, 1962, he married Marjorie L. Spear, daughter of Robert and Amy Spear Sr.

Marjorie survives along with four sons, John W. (Rebecca) Thompson of Elkhart, Timothy (Carla) Thompson of Goshen, Steven (Tracy) Thompson and Bruce (Gretchen) Thompson, both of Elkhart; nine grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; sister, Shirley Webber of Pennsylvania; two brothers, Carl Thompson of New York and Terry Thompson of Pennsylvania; and a niece, Denise (Dale) Matthews of Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws, three brothers, two sisters and two siblings who died at birth.

Jack served on active duty as a telecommunication specialist with the rank of staff sergeant in the United States Air Force from November 1952 to November 1956 and on inactive duty until October 1960 when he then received an honorable discharge. During his service, he received many medals including the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal.

Jack was employed for nine years for Elkhart Bridge & Iron and he later retired from Schafer Gear in 1997.

Visitation for Jack will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home, Elkhart.

Graveside services will take place Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Yellow Creek Mennonite Church Cemetery, 64901 C.R. 11, Goshen. The Rev. Rob Van Ess will preside.

Memorial contributions may be given to the family to help offset funeral expenses. Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
