GOSHEN — Norman Leroy Murphy, 78, formerly of Nappanee, died peacefully in his home at Waterford Crossing in Goshen Friday evening. He had been ill since October of last year.

He was born on March 19, 1935 in Riley to Arthur and Esther (Clark) Murphy. He married the love of his life, Yvonne (Secrest) Murphy on Dec. 23, 1959, at the Beech Evangelical United Brethren Church outside of Coal City, in Owen County. They were happily married for more than 53 years.

In addition to his loving wife Yvonne, he is survived by one daughter, Cynthia Murphy of Goshen, and three sons; Shannon (Shelley) Murphy, Nappanee, Kevin (Angie) Murphy, South Bend and Stanley (Irene Ortiz) from Nappanee.

Norman, a proud  grandfather, is survived by seven grandchildren, Megan Murphy, Chelsey (Geoff) Barrell, Bailey and Delaney Murphy, Jade Murphy (daughter of Tricia Alderman), and Kaylee and Sloan Murphy. He was also honored with three additional grandchildren by marriage, Hunter Townley, Austin DeVreese and Cody Alderman.

Norman was recently blessed with his first great-grandchild, Claire Elizabeth Barrell, who was born on Aug. 11, 2013, and he was also awaiting the birth of his second great-grandchild, Daubion Mac Demester, who is due in December of this year.

Norman graduated in 1953 from Gerstmeyer Technical High School in Terra Haute and in 1958 from Indiana State Teachers College where he was conferred a bachelor of science degree with a concentration in speech and hearing therapy. In 1961, he earned a master of science in special education, also from Indiana State University.

During his 40-year career, Norman worked for the Wa-Nee School Corp. as a speech and hearing therapist, school psychologist and the director of special education and for Elkhart County Special Education Cooperative (ECSEC) as a preschool coordinator and school psychologist.

Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Thompsen-Lengacher & Yoder Funeral Home, Nappanee and for one hour prior to the funeral service, which will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Nappanee United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Davidson and Pastor Teresa Dutchersmith will officiate.

Burial will be in Union Center Cemetery.
