GOSHEN — Walter Harold Hooley, beloved father, brother, uncle, grandfather and great-grandfather, went home to be with the Lord Monday at Greencroft Goshen Health Care. He was 100 years old.

Walter was born in LaGrange County near Shipshewana, Dec. 19, 1913 to Menno S. and Dora (Mast) Hooley. He was the oldest of four children. He graduated from Middlebury High School in 1931. At the age of 15, Walter accepted salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized at Forks Mennonite Church by D.D. Miller.

During World War II, he served in Civilian Public Service. He met his wife-to-be, Miriam (Kehr) Hooley, in Wooster, Ohio, where both were working at the time.

They returned to Indiana together in late 1945 and were united in marriage Dec. 22, 1946, at the home of her parents. Miriam passed away Aug. 5, 2012. They raised seven children and were married for 65 years.

Walter loved nature and farmed most of his life. He then worked for Concord Community Schools on the custodial and maintenance staffs until retirement. He remained active and did volunteer work for causes and organizations such as Victim Offender Reconciliation, Meals on Wheels and Church Community Services. He was a longtime member of Sunnyside Mennonite Church.

Along with his wife, Miriam, a sister, Verna (Hooley) Slabaugh, son-in-law, Brian (Debra) Yanko, and an infant grandson preceded Walter in death.

He is survived by two brothers, Lester (Eva) of Sun City Center, Fla. and Marion (Marjorie) of Goshen. Also surviving are seven children, Lois (Alan) Hall of Mabelvale, Ark., John (Cindi) of Elkhart, Weldon of Elijay, Ga., Rose (Steve) Slusser of Elkhart, Dorcas of South Bend, Stan (LeLoni) of Wasilla, Alaska and Debra (Brian) Yanko of Versailles, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nephews, nieces and other relatives.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home in Goshen.

Funeral services are set for 10 am. Saturday at Sunnyside Mennonite Church in Elkhart.

Burial will follow in Yellow Creek Mennonite Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sunnyside Mennonite Church.
