Harley E. Birky

Sept. 13, 1917-Sept. 23, 2013

GOSHEN — Harley E. Birky, 96, formerly of Kouts, went to be with his Heavenly Father Monday.

He was born Sept. 13, 1917 in Beemer, Neb., to Jonas and Elizabeth (Schantz) Birky. Harley was a resident of Kouts from 1919 until moving to Greencroft in Goshen in 2000.  He was a lifetime farmer and member of Hopewell Mennonite Church, where he served for many years as treasurer. He loved music and enjoyed singing in several men’s quartets as well as playing the guitar and harmonica. Harley was an avid sports fan and he and his wife, Miriam, also enjoyed spending winters in Florida.

In Blooming Glen, Pa. Dec. 6, 1952, he married Miriam Moyer, who survives, along with four children, Carol (Robert) Jennings of Valparaiso, Christine Badger (Peter) Kraft of Noblesville, Charlene (John) Sandberg of Harrisonburg, Va., and Craig (Beth) Birky of Kouts; three sisters, Lila Good of Sarasota, Fla., Alice (Delmar) Nitzsche of West Point, Neb., and Ethel (Ivan) Wengerd of Kouts; 10 grandchildren, Mike (Sarah) Sandberg, Dan (Megan) Sandberg, Jamie (Justin) Keplinger, Kristin (Erik) Pagels, Kari (Chris) Klobuka, David Badger, Daniel Badger, Hannah Birky, Andrew Birky and Jared Birky; and two great-grandchildren, George Sandberg and Nora Sandberg.

Visitation will be Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. CDT at Kosanke Funeral Home, 105 E. Indiana Ave., Kouts.

A memorial service will take place Sunday at 2:30 p.m. CDT at Hopewell Mennonite Church, 805 N. Main St., Kouts, with the Rev. Joel Short officiating.

Private burial will be at Hopewell Cemetery.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
