SYRACUSE — Hulda Thornburg passed away at home Monday.

She was born to Aria and Orval Ramsey on December 17, 1919 in Churubusco where she was known for being the star player on the high school girls’ basketball team. He, as well as her three siblings, Orval Ramsey, Wanda Chapman and Edna Shroyer, preceded her in death.  After Charles’ death, she married Ralph Thornburg, who also preceded her in death.

Hulda took classes at the Ohio State University, modeled at local department stores, and typed students’ papers while her husband completed his doctorate degree in 1940. After living in Rochester, N.Y., they settled in Goshen, where they raised their three children, Anita Cast (William) of Fort Wayne, Stanley “Bud” Hursh (Mary) of Syracuse, and Georgia (Loni) Zeichner of Sarasota, Fla.

While living in Goshen, Hulda was an active community volunteer in Psi Iota Psi sorority, Camp Fire Girls, Goshen Community Schools, Community Chest and North Central Optometric Society Auxiliary, where she served as president. She also managed her husband’s optometric office for many years after managing Harter’s Sporting Goods Store. She was an avid gardener, cook and seamstress.

Surviving her, besides her three children, are grandchildren Carter, Jennifer and Meghan Cast, Jeremy and Jeffrey Zeichner and John and Bradley Hursh. She also had nine great-grandchildren.

Services will take place at 11 a.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, Fort Wayne Saturday, , with calling preceding the service in the church parlor at 10 am.

Burial is to be in Perry Township Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be sent to the Hursh Family Music Scholarship at the Elkhart Community Foundation, P.O. Box 2932, 101 S. Main St., Elkhart, IN 46515. Scholarships will benefit Goshen High School students studying music after graduating.
