Virgil L. Snyder Sr.

GOSHEN — Virgil L. Snyder Sr., 94, Island View Drive, formerly of Woodgate Drive, died Thursday at 12:45 a.m. at The Maples of Waterford Crossing, Goshen.

He was born March 13, 1919 in Goshen, to Clifford C. and Virda I. (Shipe) Snyder.

He married Viola E. Hammer Dec. 18, 1943. She died July 11, 2010.

He is survived by his sons, Virgil L. (Merry Dee) Snyder, Goshen, and Jeffrey A. (Mimi) Snyder, Springfield, Mo.; daughter, Nancy E. (Dr. Michael) Gasko, South Bend; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

He was owner and operator of Snyder’s Men’s Shop in Goshen. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Goshen, Maplecrest Country Club, Scottish Rite, Masons and Rotary Club.

He was a veteran of the United States Army who served during World War II. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force Sept. 8, 1941 and was stationed at Fort Worth, Texas. On Nov. 30, 1944, he was transferred to U.S. Army Infantry and left New York on the troop ship, Santa Rosa. He landed in LaHarve, France, Dec. 7, 1944, and went into the Third Army under George Patton and was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He rode tanks into Germany until the war was over in Europe and was discharged from the Army in Indiana Dec. 15, 1945.

A time has been set to celebrate his life Sept. 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Goshen, where a memorial service will begin at 4 p.m.

Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery.
