Clifford C. Pettit, 88, passed away at 4:03 p.m. Wednesday at Avalon Village in Ligonier.
He was born Sept. 7, 1924, in Bucyres, Ohio, to Cannes and Ida (Brause) Pettit.
On Dec. 21, 1948, he married Susan Anderson in Chicago, Ill. She preceded him in death in January 2007.
He was a graduate of Ohio State University and also honorably served his county in the Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Clifford was a very successful entrepreneur throughout the years and is well remembered as the owner of Pettit Department Store in Ligonier along with several other businesses.
For many years he served as the president of the Ligonier Industrial Development Association and served for more than 50 years in the Ligonier Rotary Club with 25 years perfect attendance. He was also a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, the American Legion and Ligonier Presbyterian Church.
Clifford is survived by three sons, Steven (Beth) Pettit of Goshen, David (Deb) Pettit of Angola and John Pettit of Ligonier; two brothers, Robert Pettit of Lafayette, La., and Marion Pettit of Lancaster, Mass.; two sisters, Jeann Rowell of Springfield, Mo. and Mary (Earl) Kocher of Bucyres, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a brother, Paul.
There will be one hour of visitation prior to the noon funeral service Saturday at Yeager Funeral Home, 1589 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, with the Rev. Steve Mullin officiating the service.
Burial will follow in Oak Park Cemetery.
