Janis L. Huff

Oct. 31, 1919-April 23, 2013

ELKHART — Janis L. Huff, 93, died Tuesday at 12:05 a.m. at Greenleaf Health Campus.

Janis was born Oct. 31, 1919 to Ray and Helen (Shank) Larimer, in Topeka.

On April 18, 1942, she married John B. Huff, who preceded her in death in 1978.

She is survived by her children, Jackie (Bill) Clindaniel of Elkhart, John (Karen) Huff of Muncie, Jeff (Nancy) Huff and Jodi (Greg) Ferro, both of Elkhart; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judith Ann Huff, who died in 1943; and two sisters, Geneva I. Miller and Joan Ewald.

Janis was a graduate of South Bend Central High School and South Bend Business College. She worked as a secretary at Bendix, where she met her husband before World War II. She was a homemaker and also assisted in the family business, Huff’s Pharmacy, at Parkmor Plaza, which they operated in Elkhart from 1959 to 1979. The store originally opened in South Bend in 1949.

After the passing of her husband, she worked at Carson Pirie Scott for many years. She was a 50-year member of Psi Iota XI sorority, where she was a charter member and past president of Zeta Zeta Chapter. Her sorority was an integral part of her life.

Janis loved music and was in band, orchestra, choir and musical productions in high school. She played the piano and organ and loved to sing. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and volunteering. She had a special place in her heart for all of her grand and great-grandchildren.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church prior to leaving Elkhart to live with her daughter, Jodi, in Chicago in 1994. She returned to the area, living in Niles, Mich. for several years before moving back to Elkhart in 2009.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home, Elkhart, where a service is set to begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Private family burial will follow at Rice Cemetery in Elkhart.

Memorials may be made to the Center for Hospice and Palliative Care or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Three Goshen elementary schools — Chandler, Chamberlain and West Goshen — are providing free meals to all students during the school year as part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010. Nearly 80 percent of students at Chandler, 89 percent of students at Chamberlain and 78 percent of students at West Goshen already qualify for free or reduced-price lunches based on their family income. How do you feel about the new lunch program?

I think it’s a good idea to feed all the students free of charge
I think those who can afford it should pay for their school meals
