Josephine ‘Jo’ Huser Troyer

July 28, 1926-March 22, 2013

GOSHEN — Josephine “Jo”  Huser Troyer, 86, died early Friday morning, in her home surrounded by her family.  She had been in declining health since December.

She was born July 28, 1926, in Berne to Henry and Verena (Schwartz) Huser.

She is survived by three daughters, Rebecca (Paul) Christophel, Harrisonburg, Va., Verena “Kay” (Larry) Schrock, Goshen, and Mary (Dave) Hoefer, Goshen; a son, Mark Troyer, Syracuse; 11 grandchildren; two great-granddaughters and several step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Bobear, Clifton Park, N.Y.; two sisters-in-law, Carolyn Huser, Austin, Texas, and Freeda “Fritz” Huser, Goshen; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her children’s father, Rudy Troyer, in 1992 and her husband, Robert Hartzler, in 1994; four brothers, Sam, Bill, Dale and Merlin “Lee” Huser; and a sister, Leah Kalb.

A Goshen resident since 1956, Jo was the owner and operator of The Lunch Room from 1959 to 1971 and Plain & Fancy Restaurant from 1969 to 1998, both in Goshen.

She was a member of College Mennonite Church, where she enjoyed helping in the kitchen. She was a 35-year volunteer with Goshen General Hospital Auxiliary, and a past board member of Amigo Centre, Sturgis, Mich. Her gift with food continued as many were recipients of her signature soups and pies.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home.

A 6:30 p.m. memorial service will be conducted on Tuesday at College Mennonite Church. Family friend Rev. Sam Troyer and Pastor Pamela Yoder, College Mennonite Church, will officiate.

A private graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, LaGrange.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Salvation Army, in honor of the first Pancake and Sausage Day, which was hosted in 1963 at The Lunch Room, The Window or MCC for the Mennonite Relief Sale.

Online condolences may be shared at www.yoderculpfuneralhome.com.
