Dale R. Thwaits

BRISTOL — Dale R. Thwaits, 88, died Monday at 11:20 a.m. at Greencroft Goshen Health Care.

He was born May 13, 1925, in New Paris, to Robert and Edna (Parker) Thwaits.

He married Margaret Gibson Aug. 16, 1947. She died June 21, 1992.

He married Dorothy Helm Nov. 25, 1992. She died May 3.

He is survived by his daughter, Karen (Jeff) Smaka, Bristol; stepchildren, Karen (George)  Bake, Osceola, Cindy (Carl) Gutzman, South Dakota, and Jim (AJ) Nicholson, Wisconsin; brother, Lawrence (Doris) Thwaits, Syracuse; grandchildren, Todd (Rebecca) Smaka, Boynton Beach, Fla., Ryan (Tammy) Smaka, Goshen, and Kari (Abraham) Cremeens, West Lafayette; great-grandchildren, Zachary Smaka, Karsyn Smaka, Benjamin Smaka, Leilani Smaka and Liam Cremeens; stepgrandchildren, George Bake Jr., Jenny Spicher, Monica Tiahrt, Tyler Gutzman, Samuel Nicholson and Luke Nicholson; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wives; sister, Ada Leers; and brothers, Charles, Donald and Robert Thwaits.

He was a farmer and a member of the Elkhart Flying Club. He loved to play shuffleboard, swim and fish and spend winters in Sarasota, Fla.

A service to celebrate his life will take place at a later date.

Burial will be in Violett Cemetery, Goshen.

Memorial contributions may be made to Goshen Hospice.

Rieth-Rohrer-Ehret Funeral Home, Goshen, is handling arrangements.

There has been discussion at West Goshen Elementary School to require mandatory student uniforms in the future. How do you feel about the prospect of mandatory student uniforms in a public school environment?

I think it’s an excellent idea that is way overdue
I think it’s a bad idea and would be restrictive for students and parents.
