Clifford L. Schreck

June 27, 1924-July 4, 2013

BELLEVUE, Wash. — The Rev. Clifford L. Schreck, formerly of Goshen, Ind., died July 4 in Bellevue, Wash., where he had been living the past four years at Sunrise Assisted Living.

He was born June 27, 1924, in East Cleveland, Ohio, to Irving F. Schreck and Miriam Ebert Schreck.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the Pacific Fleet, based out of Seattle, and was stationed in Japan as part of the Shore Patrol after the war had ended. After the War he attended Wittenberg College of Springfield, Ohio, where he met Emma Cocklin. They married Dec. 22, 1950, in Mechanicsburg, Pa. She preceded him in death in September 2010. He graduated from Hamma Divinity School in 1950.

He is survived by five children, Timothy (John Frybort) Schreck, Goshen, Ind., the Rev. Miriam (Tim Huffman) Schreck, Newark, Ohio, James (Kris) Schreck, Colorado Springs, Colo., Ruth (John) Vandergrift, Bellevue, Wash., and the Rev. Paul (Karen) Schreck, Round Lake Beach, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Matthew Schreck, Sara Schreck, Benjamin Vandergrift, Jennifer Vandergrift, Aaron Schreck, Kevin Huffman and Todd Huffman; and three great-grandchildren, Star, Olivia and Asher Huffman.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a sister, Pauline Mitzel; and two brothers, Paul and Kenneth Schreck.

After his graduation from Seminary, he was ordained as a Lutheran pastor. He served parishes in Richmond, Monroeville, Frankfort, Terre Haute, Kokomo, Goshen, and Winchester, Ind., as well as Berwyn, Ill., and Somerset, Ky.

He and Emma retired to Goshen, Ind. In 2001 they moved from their home in Goshen to Juniper Place, and later Evergreen Place at Greencroft. In 2009 they moved to Sunrise Assisted Living, Bellevue, Wash.

They enjoyed travelling extensively in Europe, Latin America and throughout the United States.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the 11 a.m. memorial service Tuesday, July 23, at First English Lutheran Church, Goshen, Ind. The Rev. Gene Hollingsworth will officiate.

Burial with military honors will be in Cocklin Cemetery, Dillsburg, Pa.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lutheran World Relief.
