ELKHART — Ruth N. Brentlinger, 94, of Elkhart, died at 2:10 a.m. Saturday while residing at Riverside Village, Elkhart.
She was born on September 20, 1919 in Deshler, Ohio the daughter of Charles and Myrtle (Brown) Van Scoyoc.
She married Donald A. Brentlinger of Swanton, Ohio on June 30, 1940.
Surviving are daughter, LeRoy (Kay) Brekke of Middlebury; four grandsons, Rick and Ron Brentlinger, Dan and Scott Brekke; six great-grandsons, Jacob, Joshua, Conner and Ethan Brentlinger, Nathan and Grant Brekke and brother, Robert Van Scoyoc of Deshler, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years; son, Ted C. Brentlinger; sister, Jean Stateler and brother, Howard Van Scoyoc.
Ruth graduated from Deshler High School and attended Bowling Green State University of Ohio.
Ruth worked as a church secretary at Ridgedale Presbyterian Church in South Bend, Ruth worked 11 years as secretary of the Elkhart District of the United Methodist Church, where she retired in 1981. She had been a member of the Handbell Choir of the First United Methodist Church and the Trinity United Methodist Church in Elkhart.
After retirement, she had volunteered at the Oaklawn Psychiatric Center and in the church office as receptionist. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Elkhart and Mary Susanna Circle. Ruth was a lifetime member of the Bashor Home Auxiliary.
Friends may call one hour prior to the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, Middlebury. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola beside her husband, Donald and son, Ted Brentlinger. The Rev. Ron Russell will officiate. Hartzler-Gutermuth-Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements
Donations may be made in Ruth’s name to Riverview Adult Day Center at Trinity United Methodist Church, Elkhart or the Alzheimer’s Association.
