Helen L. Stine Matz

June 20, 1918-Dec. 14, 2013

FERDINAND — Helen L. Stine Matz, 95, formally of Bremen, passed away Dec. 14, 2013 in Ferdinand.

Helen was born June 20, 1918 in Bremen, to Owen C. and Gladys S. (Abbiehl) Stine. She was the second oldest of seven children. She graduated in 1936 from Nappanee High School.

Helen was a hard worker. In her younger years, she worked as a waitress at the Bremen Hotel. During World War II, she worked at Gerber Manufacturing where she sewed back pockets in uniforms and at Koontz Wagner Wire where she wound airplane coils. She was a secretary at the Lone Star Boat Company, Bremen SKF Bearing Co., from where she retired, and Champion Motor Homes. After retirement she continued working many part time jobs.

Helen was a lifelong resident of Bremen and moved to Jasper in 1995. She loved to travel and drove to many places in the United States. Josh, her traveling companion, made many trips to Florida with her.

Helen loved her grandchildren and had them visiting often. In younger years, she had gardens of flowers and vegetables, preserving all she grew. She loved sewing and would make all of her children’s clothes. One of her bigger handmade projects were the twirler’s uniforms of Bremen High School Band.

She is survived by her daughters Shirley Jordan of Seaford, Del., and Beverly (Daniel) Turnock of Dale. Also surviving is a sister, Daisy Mae (Lavern-deceased) Hollar of Etna Green; brother, Lowell (Marylou) of Goshen; and a sister-in-law, Shirley J. Stine of Bremen. Surviving her are also seven grandchildren, Jack Jordon, Beth (Jordan) Woyt, Patrick Turnock, Kelley (Turnock) Johnson, Colleen (Turnock) Wasemann, Kathleen (Turnock) Doan and Christine (Turnock) Kaiser; 15 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Otho, Dale and Owen Jr.; sister, Luella Christman; son-in-law, Roland Jordan; and grandchild by marriage, Gregg Woyt.
