Max Devon Slabaugh

GOSHEN — Max Devon Slabaugh, 76, died Tuesday evening at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 28, 1936 south of Nappanee, to Willard and Marjorie (Young) Slabaugh.

He married Loretta M. Weyrick Sept. 2, 1956, in Columbia Station, Ohio.  She died June 24, 2004.  

He then married Shirley (Losee) Flowers Oct. 30, 2005.

She survives along with two daughters, Julie (Thomas) Schiefer, Nappanee, and Jill (David) Stone, Sarasota, Fla.; a son, Daniel N. (Claudia) Slabaugh, Columbus; a stepdaughter, Mindy (Philip) Lechlitner, Wakarusa; a stepson, Monte (Charlene) Flowers, Nappanee; 11 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; a great-grandchild; two step great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mary Crowe, Bremen, Joanne Kroft, Savannah, Ohio, and Rita Moore, Nappanee.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, David Lee Slabaugh, who died in 1989; and a brother, Wayne Slabaugh.

A member of First Brethren Church, New Paris, Max graduated from Nappanee High School in 1954, Ashland University in 1958 and received his master’s degree from Indiana University.  He did construction work for many summers during his school breaks.

An avid musician and singer, he served as choir director at First Brethren Church, Goshen, and often performed solos for many area churches.

He taught school for 38 years, retiring from Goshen Community Schools after 31 years.  He had served as interim pastor at First Brethren Church, New Paris.

Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home,  Goshen.

A 10 a.m. funeral service will be conducted Saturday at First Brethren Church, Nappanee.  The Rev. Jeff Estep of First Brethren Church, New Paris, and sons-in-law, the Revs. Tom Schiefer and David Stone, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Violett Cemetery, Goshen. Pallbearers will be Nicholas, Timothy and Christopher Slabaugh, Jonathan and Michael Stone, Brian Bell, Andrew Burton and David Slabaugh Whiteside.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Brethren Church, New Paris.

The family would appreciate cards and letters with stories and remembrances of Max’s life and they request visitors wear something red to the visitation and funeral service.
