GOSHEN — ELKHART — Doug Brown, 67, passed away Tuesday from cancer.

Doug was born in Glendale, Calif., June 20, 1946. Doug’s family moved to Elkhart in 1948, where he lived until his death. Doug graduated from Elkhart High School in 1964, where he lettered in football and track and was a starter on the 1963 state football championship team. Doug also played football at Ball State University, where he graduated in 1971.

Doug was a physical education teacher and coach of basketball, volleyball, and softball at St. Thomas. During Doug’s tenure, St. Thomas won several Indiana State Presidential Physical Fitness Championships. Doug coached football at Brookdale and was an assistant football and girl’s track coach at Elkhart Central. Doug was on the staff at Elkhart Central and Ivy Tech. For 20 years Doug was an IHSAA umpire for girl’s softball. One of the greatest joys of Doug’s life was his work as an usher for Notre Dame sporting events, especially football where he was a supervisor and served for 37 consecutive years. Doug was a member of Beulah Missionary Church.

Doug was preceded in death by his mother, Gwenneth Mangum, and his grandparents, Glenn and Martha Rodgers.

Doug is survived by his stepfather, Robert Mangum of Goshen; and his sister, Cheryl (David) Fradenburg of Richmond.

Visitation will be at Beulah Missionary Church, 57595 Old C.R. 17, Goshen, Friday between 4 and 8 p.m. and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service Saturday. Doug’s first cousin, Dr. Brent Poe, senior pastor of the church, will officiate. Lunch will follow the service for all in attendance.

Memorials may be given to Beulah Missionary Church.
