Orris D. Shafer

— SYRACUSE — Orris D. Shafer, 87, East Lake View Drive, Syracuse, died Wednesday at 6:49 p.m. at his residence.

He was born June 18, 1925 in Elkhart County to Henry E. and Emma B. (Smeltzer) Shafer.

He married Phyllis Scherer on Aug. 7, 1947. She died Sept. 24, 1989. His second marriage was to Sherrie Vernier on Aug. 26, 1971 at their residence. She survives.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Shafer of Elkhart; two nephews, Stephen (Janice) Shafer of Orlando, Fla., and Greg (Kim) Shafer of Tallahasee, Fla.; and five second cousins, Carol Guyas of Ligonier, Tim (Joyce) Gaff of Kimmell, James (Glenda) Duff of Walkerton, Pamela Andrew of Morristown, Tenn., and Joann Cripe of Ligonier.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert L. Shafer; and a son, Mark Allen Shafer.

He was a World War II Army veteran, discharged in 1946.

He worked at Tom Naquin Chevrolet in Elkhart for 29 years and nine months, and was the owner/operator of Village Green Lawn and Garden in Syracuse for 15 years. He retired as manager of Southeast Bay Yacht Club, which is part of Anderson Wawasee Boat Co.

Shafer was a member of Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, and a graduate of Cromwell High School. He was a member of Kiwanis International, and was Interclub Chairman from 1978 to 1979. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and golfing.

Visitation is set from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 26, at Wawasee Lakeside Chapel, 10419 N. Turkey Creek Road, Syracuse, where the funeral service is set to begin at 11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Harlan Steffen.

Burial will be in Yellow Creek Cemetery.
