Dorothy Rose Bird entered into eternal rest on July 25, 2013 at the age of 93.
Dorothy was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Aurora, Mo., to the late Edward and Clara Hierholzer. She moved to Peru, Ind., with her family and met and married Kenneth D. Bird on Oct. 25, 1939. He preceded her in death after 60 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by a son, James David Bird; sisters Irene Hamby, Anderson, Ind., Carol Johnson, Florida, and Ruth Fenimore, Anderson, Ind., and brother Ray Hierholzer, Amboy, Ind.
She was a research librarian at Miles Laboratory in Elkhart and worked on the election committee in Indianapolis.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Bird; and son Kent (Coral) Bird of Indianapolis; a granddaughter, Kathryn Bird, Indianapolis; and grandsons, Kevin Bird, Indianapolis, and Scott Bird, St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister, Joanne Birkey of Peru; and a brother, John Hierholzer.
Dorothy was a longtime member of St. Luke Catholic Church, Indianapolis. She enjoyed traveling and cruises with her husband. Her favorite trip was to Provence and Paris, France. Dorothy was an avid gardener and a talented decorator. She enjoyed playing bridge with several groups and attending the Indianapolis Pops concerts and Town Hall Series.
The family would like to thank her two private caregivers, Irma Bagett and Maxine Grand, for their loving care.
Friends and family are invited to attend visitation to be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel 740 East 86th St., Indianapolis, on Tuesday July 30, 2013. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at St Luke Catholic Church, 7575 Holliday Dive East, Indianapolis.
Burial will follow at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in Peru at 3:30 p.m.
